Dirty Bird Sandwiches

Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, and Stuffing. That's it!

While piecing together our Thanksgiving leftover sandwiches Friday evening CK and I had an impassioned discussion over the correct technique for creating a true snacking masterpiece. I’m a steadfast fan of the holiday holy trinity: turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing. It has to be on white bread, or a white bulky roll and there definitely isn’t mayonnaise. Also, any leftover sides i.e. sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes stay on the side where they belong. They aren’t going anywhere near my sandwich.

The Whole Shebang

CK’s take: In my family, the “Dirty Bird” sandwich is the aggregation of any and every leftover from Thanksgiving, piled high on a bun. This includes Erin’s “Holy Trinity,” but also includes, well, everything else! In this case, it was turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, turnips, sweet potatoes (two different kinds), green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce. I also threw in a little mayonnaise in lieu of gravy. It would have also included things from the night before like ambrosia and gravy, but we were unfortunately out. The general rule of thumb is “if you’re eating it the night before, it should go on the bun the next day.”

Now’s your chance to chime in on this all important issue. Who’s right? Do you construct your leftover sandwiches another way? Are we both doing it wrong? Comment and let us know.
