I just recently made them and they turned out beautifully. One thing I would recommend is keeping the centers as thick as she shows in the pictures. I tried a thinner center and they were hard to dip. I would also use a small center for the same reason.

I LOVE peppermint patties, and even more when they are heart shaped! If I could save you and your readers some "dipping" frustration, you might want to check into using a candy mold instead. FAST & EASY. Candy molds come in all shapes and sizes (think peanut butter cups!) They are really inexpensive (usually .99 for a mold) and you "paint" the chocolate in the mold, let it set, and press your filling (if your filling is sticky, try refrigerating it for 2 hours), and cover with more chocolate from a squeeze bottle and freeze for 2 minutes to set. To see this process, check out my post here:

I will NEVER go back to dipping chocolates again. :-)

I bet coconut oil in place of the wax or shortening would work well for the coating, too!

These look really good! I've tried homemade peppermint patty candies before and they didn't turn out. I will definitely try these! BTW - I've used Gulf Wax on my peanut butter balls for years and I haven't grown any extra eyes either ;-) Thanks for sharing this great recipe!

I just made these yesterday and they were a lot of work!! I had the same problem that the batter was super sticky and wasn't taking the powdered sugar to make it more doughy. I ended up adding A LOT of additional powdered sugar. I had small christmas shaped cookie cutters that I used. They look super cute...they are still in the fridge so lets hope they taste as good as they look!!
