I grew up in Lewiston, the original Sams, right across from St Joseph's Church was the place to go.
Whenever I go back to Maine it is required I bring home 1/2 dz Sams. Oil on the side.
 It's the bread, it's the onions, it's the oil, it's a Sams.

Amatos is OK but when I think about home, Sam's is the only Sandwich shop I think about. The service is really great too. They really got it together. And Erin, I know what you mean about the cheese.... or is it the oil....or the onions? IDK It just brings me back in time to those lazy summer days @ Range Pond. Ahhh:)

Hi Holly,

I'd love to get an Italian with you sometime soon. In my defense though we stopped at the store in Lewiston on our way back home. I think the closest Sam's to Portland is the one in Freeport. Which could be double trouble if we were able to have Whoopie Pies AND shop till we drop.

OMG, those whoopie pies do me in every time. I have dreams about them. They're so moist and delicious- they are pretty much my favorite.

Tsk tsk though, driving through town and not calling me!! I will get an italian at Sam's with you next time!

Hey Beth,

I haven't had an Amato's sandwich in forever. Amato's has a crustier roll, right? They're good, but I still like Sam's better.

You know what beats Sam's? Amato's! They have a very unique pickle and fresh tomatos and delicious olives. I really miss them, you can get that at On The Run right after the on ramp to the turnpike from Auburn.
