What was once only a lowly Microsoft Word document is now a real live book. I know this to be a fact because I signed 10 copies of it for my mom last week. Pretty cool, right?! Thanks, Mom! Anyway, I feel a little bit like Geppetto and Poptails is my version of Pinocchio, only much smaller and less likely to talk back to me. I’m really excited to share the book with you and look forward to hearing your feedback!
Maybe your new summer go-to pop will become the Shirley Temper Tantrum, for those of you who miss the days of pretend drinking with your parents at chinese food restaurants and want to try a version with a real kick for once. Or perhaps you’ll enjoy my slightly inappropriately named boozy, blueberry popsicle that I’ve affectionately dubbed “Blueberries for Gown-Up Sal.” See what I did there? It’s a double shout-out to Maine! There are also traditional cocktails to choose from including my personal favorite, the Dirty Martini complete with olives and olive juice as well as a Sweet Manhattan. In the end I spiked and froze everything from yogurt to milk and eggnog to carrot juice. Not all together! That would be gross.
So how would you feel about winning a copy? I have two sitting on my desk right now!
To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave a comment on this post letting me know what your first legally imbibed alcoholic drink happened to be. Do you even remember? I think mine was something gross like a Midori Sour or possibly a Whiskey Sour. I do recall that my group of friends and I also did Kamikaze shots on my 21st birthday and the mere thought of how they taste turns my stomach. Ick!
In addition, If you share the link to this contest on your own blog, Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ account you may have one additional entry for a total of two possible chances to win. If you choose this option please leave a link to your shout out as your second comment. Two separate winners will be selected via the nifty random number generator on Friday, July 13th (spooky!) at 5:00 PM PST and then I’ll promptly arrange to have the book shipped to your home. Please note that this book can only be shipped to U.S. residents. Best of luck!
[Note: All popsicle photographs in this post appear in the book Poptails and were photographed by Allan Penn].

Hi Erin, my first cock tail drink I had was a sloe gin fizz,.
My first drink was Pineapple Wine, and I puked for about three days after finishing the bottle with a handful of double-stuffed oreos!
My first drink was probably beer – stolen from a glass someone else was drinking.
My first drink that BELONGED to me – was sparkling white wine (I necked an entire bottle of it down and threw most of it up).
ace’s pear cider. i could go for one of those right now…
Pretty sure it was a rum and coke. My taste for gin and tonic came much later, although it is now my drink of choice.

errr…facebooked!
My first drink was at Kowloon restaurant and it was “Rum and Tropical Fruit Juices,” not to be confused with the also popular “Tropical Fruit Juices and Rum!”
My first was gin and tonic….something I like to this day!
I bought an assortment to share with co-workers, premixed Sangria and wine sprtizers (it was the 80’s); neither of which interest me now.
Hi Erin,
My first was Amaretto on the rocks. Not bad…..
i have never had a legal one… i decided to stop drinking prior to coming of age.

Congratulations on the book!
My first alcoholic drink (which was legally imbibed because I was awesome/lame and didn’t drink ’till my 21st birthday) was a daiquiri, purchased during the MIDDLE OF A HURRICANE on my 21st birthday with my roommates. We purchased maybe 4 big ones to get us through the storm…
Grasshopper . We used TGIFridays mix.
My first alcoholic drink was probably a Goldstar beer which is popular here in Israel.
Congrats on your book Erin, how very exciting!!
Mine was probably vodka with crystal light, which grosses me out so much now, lol.
Hi, Erin. Back in the day, the legal drinking age was 18 and I was a freshman in college. All we drank was beer, beer, and more beer. There were kegs in every dorm.
I think my first legal drink was a margarita. My 21st birthday was a little miserable – I had to work all day that day. But in the last few minutes left in the day, my boyfriend and I managed to get in a quickie celebration at a local bar/restaurant. They didn’t even check my ID!
So happy and excited for you on your first book, Erin. 🙂 Congrats again!
I’m a little fuzzy on what the first one was, but I’m thinking it was probably a glass of wine or an amaretto sour.
Congratulations on your book – so excited for you!!
First legal drink: Miller Lite at my then-boyfriend’s house. First legal cocktail: amaretto sour at Applebee’s. Thank goodness my tastes (in drinks, restaurants and men!) have evolved with age.
Here’s my post on my facebook page about the giveaway also. 🙂 https://www.facebook.com/ChocoRocco/posts/330608653692725
My first alcoholic drink was Strawberry Wine Cooler…..Wow, this post really brought back memories.
I tweeted. https://twitter.com/#!/Cinbat03
I’m pretty certain my 21st birthday started off with margaritas at dinner. It went downhill from there.
Congratulations!!! I invested in a Zoku popsicle maker this year but haven’t tried any of boozy ones!!
My first….Slow Gin Fizz. Can’t even come close to them today!
Thanks for the opportunity to win!
My first legal drink of alcohol was Light bacardi and coke. It was my 21 birthday drink, at a bar that I had been illegally drinking at for several years. The owner of the bar didn’t think that it was very funny and 86ed me, for the rest of the night.
My first drink was a wine cooler.
I believe mine was a 7&7…I let an older guy friend pick out a drink for me and I’ve been hooked ever since!
A Sex on the Beach …
Congratulations!!!!! I am sure it was beer. But I don’t remember!
Screwdriver!
Boones Farm Wine – Strawberry Hill – right from the bottle!
I don’t remember my first legal drink! I do remember my first drink ever, but that was at age 19 or so. My first legal drink was probably something silly like rum and coke or vodka/cranberry. I was really into vodka/cranberry back then.
My first legal drink was a vodka and 7-up. It was a week after my 18th birthday and I drove to a bar and ordered it just because I could…
kamikaze shooter!
I was lucky enough to grow up in a country where it is not illegal to drink under age — therefore people learn to drink at home and restaurants with their parents, most people drink slowly, and stop drinking when they start getting too much of that happy feeling.
Since when I was 4 or 5, if I were coughing, my father would rather give me port wine instead of cough syrup. On special occasions like Christmas and Easter I would have a tiny glass of wine, and if it was too cold, a bit of port, or a hot chocolate with a tablespoon of cognac. I should also mention the occasional tiny sip into my mother’s Caipirinhas during the Summer.
My first cocktail was a Manhattan when I turned 15 years old. It is still my favourite.
When I came to live in the U.S. I was already over 21, and my first drink here was a Maker’s Mark bourbon, on the rocks.
ERIN — I cannot wait to get my hands on this book! I need some poptails in my life immediately. I have no recollection of my first legal drink but I bet it was cheap beer.
mudslide! yuuuum
CONGRATS ON THE BOOK! That’s so fun! I hope someday I get to see the process from my own end 🙂
My first legal drink? Oh dear, I don’t quite remember. I think it may have been a tequila or rum shot at midnight when it turned into my 21st birthday.
CONGRATS!!! Weeeeee! First legal drink? I think a shot of SoCo and lime. EW.
My first legal drink was an amaretto sour in La$ Vega$ at the stroke of midninght around a black jack table!
In my midwestern hometown it was customary to celebrate your 21st on a bar crawl where all of the downtown bars (there were about 20 or so) participated in giving you their signature drink for free. You always started at Sandy’s bar where they presented you with their drink the “abortion” complete with mini hanger as decoration. I just remember that the primary base was vodka, with OJ and some grenadine for a red hue. I understand they’ve switched the drink –a bit of controversy about the name (you think?) to a different drink called the “Elk Creek.”
I somehow made it to 12 bars that night and enjoyed my first martini (cosmo) at Cliff’s -a martini bar. Oh had I wished that was my first legal drink instead!!
Mu first drink was a slow gin fizz. Wow that was a long time ago. Don’t think I could drink those now.
Good luck with your book.
Cathy
My first drink was a fuzzy navel wine cooler and man did I have no idea what better there was available! I am happy for you Erin, this is a great accomplishment!!
My first legal drink was a cosmopolitan! It was disgusting – ah youth 🙂
Probably Captain Morgan’s with ginger ale? Hmm … The book looks delish! Congrats to you. xoxo
Rum & Coke!!! That was 40 years ago!! Got soooo sick,,,haven’t had one since!!! Yuk!
Whiskey Sour
Hmmm, I think my first legally imbibed drink was either an Amaretto Sour or a Sweet Tart. My girlfriends went easy on me that night 🙂
Cranberry juice and vodka – I’m sure it has a proper drink name, but it was my first and I no longer drank them by the time my eyes were opened to other (and much better) adult drinks 😉
It was a shandy at the neighbour’s party. blerg
oh I don’t remember the drink! I did meet my friend at CPK for lunch so I did get something then but dodn’t remember what.
I did have Dom later that night. Enjoyed in a beer glass. I know- shameful!
It was a frozen margarita- before I learned they were better on the rocks!
My first drink was fruity and delicious…but it is possible the rest of the night obscured the name of said drink 🙂
Mine was a rum and coke 🙂
