Cooking Book Pile Challenge From LibraryThing

Books! Books! Everywhere

I’m a huge fan of LibraryThing and since this month’s “Book Pile” contest involves cooking I just had to enter a photo. By the way, I’m GirlieErin on LibraryThing. Let me know if you’re also a member. It really is a wonderful book cataloging tool! In fact, I had such a great time adding books with my cuecat that I volunteered to add Chris’s books as well. Now every single book in our apartment is listed, even my cookbooks.

Herbs On Demand

For Christmas I bought my mother an adorable window gardening kit from Red Envelope.  In fact, I thought it was too cute to pass up so I ended up purchasing one for my own use as well.  Last Monday I finally got my act together enough to plant the seeds and as you can see below I’m pretty excited about their progress.   Unfortunately I wasn’t paying attention and I planted the Chives in the Oregano pot and the Oregano in the Chives pot. Oh well. At least the Basil is correct.  After they get a little more hearty I’ll transfer them to my window box so I can hopefully grow a gigantic “forest” of fresh herbs all summer long.

Butterfly In The Sky

I’ve been tasked with bringing dessert to Easter Dinner tomorrow and I racked my brain all week trying to find an original dish that would be cute, tasty, yet still significantly impressive. I had almost given up and resigned myself to the fact that I would probably be stopping at the Whole Foods bakery on the way to Chris’s dad’s house, when I came across a recipe for an absolutely adorable butterfly cake. As a kid my family was a big fan of the traditional bunny cake so this seemed right up my alley. I even braved the hordes of frantic parents in the Easter candy isles at Target in order to find the requisite pastel M&M’s.  Now by no means am I very much of a cake decorator, and frosting the raw edges gave me fits, but I think it came out pretty well. At the very least It looks like a 10 year old made it instead of a 7 year old. High praise indeed!

This Is My Dutch Oven In The Sun

Heavenly Cast Iron

Sometimes checking email in the morning just sends me into a complete fit of envy. For instance today I received the most beautiful and tempting ad from Sur La Table introducing the full line of Carribean Blue Le Creuset. Of course it’s more gorgeous than words and I want the entire set. Obviously I can’t justify such an impulsive purchase (since I do already own a very nice array of All-Clad stainless and the much talked about Target Chefmate Dutch Oven) but I might be able to justify just a little taste of bright blue stoneware, especially as it’s on sale. To splurge or not to splurge, that is the question.
