When Recipes Attack

Erin's Kitchen NightmareThis evening I made a homemade macaroni and cheese. I layered everything together, popped it in the oven and returned a phone call to a friend. Suddenly I heard a loud crash and then a splash. Horrified, I opened the oven door and found a gooey shattered mess. My glass baking dish had exploded! I have no idea what happened. The dish wasn’t cold, and I’ve used it dozens of times. I googled my predicament and apparently glass dishes sometimes get hairline fractures and then when they’re heated they break. I was seriously upset, but Chris was awesome and he made me laugh, and then drove to Whole Foods for a rotisserie chicken. He’s out in the kitchen right now cleaning the oven. Crisis averted — this time, but be vigilant. You never know when a Pyrex bomb will strike again!

  • I live in fear of this happening to me. I have a Pyrex dish with a tiny chip in it and am always afraid that it will explode but I’m too cheap to go buy a new one when the old one works.

  • It still looked delicious, even splattered all over the oven. So, uh, when are you going to make this dish again, sans explosion? I can’t wait :D

When you moved the dish must have been dropped or bumped. I have had this happen before it does make a mess I think it was the pork chop casserole with the potatoes!!!

  • Remember Jaime’s story of exploding pyrex?! It’s never happened to me, but if it did, i am pretty sure I would die from a heart attack because i’m jumpy enough without the major explosion of glass and food! I agree with CK, that does look really good, what was all that in there?

  • Oh no! :(

  • I’m always afraid of crap like that happening. That’s why I save all my cooking for you to do!

  • I am so sorry you had to experience this Pyrex trauma, Erin! I too, have been scarred by Pyrex, both emotionally and physically. The pan, at the time, was sitting on the edge of my kitchen counter, and I heard a funny crackling noise. I made the connection, threw Kelly out of the kitchen and on to the ground military style, hoisted myself on to the kitchen counter across the room and curled up into a little ball, and watched in horror as the pan exploded into a million pieces. We found glass shards around the room for months, and I even got a couple shards in my leg & foot. I have a hard time trusting Pyrex to this day!

But oh, that mac & cheese does look delicious! And thank goodness you & Chris were not hurt!

  • Oh my, I saw this and just had to reply. A couple of months ago I removed my pyrex dish from the oven, placed it on the counter and it literally exploded into thousands of pieces. It scared the you know what out of me! Thankfully I was wearing my glasses otherwise I would have had an eyeful of glass. Like another of your readers, we found glass for months. To this day, every time I take pyrex out of the oven I look (and run) away!

  • oh my gosh, this is so frightening! i had no idea that could even happen — fortunately, i broke my pyrex baking dish all by myself about a year ago… but guess what i am NOT asking for as a wedding present??

  • [...] and cheese. Shortly after putting the dish in the oven I heard a loud crash. The glass baking dish actually exploded and all of that expensive Whole Foods cheddar and Gruyère ended up burned onto the bottom of the [...]

i just had a pyrexplosion last night. had a pork tenderloin in the 9×9 undr the broiler of my oven. after about 7 or 8 minutes, i smelled burning, went to check and the pork was perfectly carmelized on the top. i pulled the pan out to flip the pork, and the pan blew up while i was holding both handles. a huge chunk fell into my knee, piercing ligaments and stuff. sent me to the er for stitches and a tetanus shot. i knew that could happen, because i did the same thing about 5 years ago, but i was in a hurry, and my pregnant wife was hungry. painful lesson.
