You may have noticed that I haven’t updated in oh…an eternity. That’s because I’ve been swallowed by a sea of moving boxes for the last week. Even if you didn’t feel my absence BlogHer certainly did and reminded me today by shutting off my ads. I was duly chastised by this action and decided to take a few moments from my post work unpacking routine to give you a little video tour of the monstrosity that is my kitchen and therefore my LIFE right now.
There are no cookies, cakes, or other carbs to be posted because I can barely find the salt and pepper shakers. I’ve eaten so much take-out over the last seven days that I may never be able to look at another pizza box, burrito, or random deli sandwich ever again. I’m craving a home cooked meal and I just want to be able to find my favorite utensils. Plus I’m certain my KitchenAid mixer has NEVER gone this long without being turned on. I hope I haven’t hurt her feelings.
So please view the above. Hopefully it will give you a bit of a laugh. This is the first time I’ve used a Flip Video before and I’ve got a bit of the Blair Witch shaky-shake going on so try to bear with me. And if you have any helpful organizational ideas for my now cupboard-less life please let me know. I’m a bit at a loss.

At cac we lined the shelves with plexi we had cut so things didn’t tip over easily. This also stop the little feet on standing mixers and food processors from getting ripped off when you try to slide it off the shelf.
We bought plastic cambros (just google cambro) to hold collections of things like oils, vinegars, etc that might not have the cleanest of bottles so we could…A) keep it all together without tipping and B) empty and clean cambro is much easier than cleaning metro shelving wires.
Silverware lives in one of those restaurant style 4 bay plastic things. Works a treat.
Things with multiple parts like the immersion blender, hand mixer, etc all live in their own clear plastic – dust free- cambros.
I’m still jealous! so cute.
Given how hectic my life is right now I can so relate!
I can SO identify with your video! My hubby is military so trying to make things you bought for one place fit into the next is always a nightmare. LOL The only way I’m able to figure out where everything goes is unpack it ALL. Get things out where you can see them and start putting it away as you go. And believe me you will reorganize it a million times before you find *just* the right plan that makes you happy. I love Jo’s suggestion about having plexi cut for those shelves. I have some similar shelving and I can totally see where putting smaller things on it would drive me insane with things toppling over. Always think vertical! And use the side of the fridge, awesome storage space for magnetized things!
The place is adorable! Take a breath and then enjoy getting settled in! And those boxes…I swear they multiply like bunnies, even with kitties consuming them.
Erin,
What a wonderful space…good luck with the unpacking…
Carmen
the space is beautiful, even if you haven’t unpacked yet! I love the bakers racks and everything will come together when you have some time to devote to it this weekend – i mean come on, you managed to work all week AND purchase AND assemble something from ikea? That’s an accomplishment of itself!!
Great job with the Flip – I love mine – it’s so easy to use! My favorite part by far of the video is Dexter eating the boxes…glad to see I’m not the only one with cats with annoying habits (ie using the litter box during dinner…)
Anyways good luck with everything, looking good, and if you want to set up shop I do have one of those kids cash registers you can borrow! xoxo
My cats ate cardboard boxes when we moved too… I’ve never been so irritated by anything in my life as I was by picking up those slimy little pieces of cardboard confetti. BUT… it was a REALLY great motivator to keep me moving and unpacking.
OH! And I meant to also say… I think it will be wonderful! I just love the look and feel of your loft! And I think those bakers racks are a great solution. Good thinking!
Our new place had cabinets, but not enough to really store everything. So we got some similar racks and created this: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=406552&l=395e91220c&id=1454583042
I love it beyond words. Good luck getting organized!
Love it! Be interesting to see how you hang
and put things to make up for no cupboards! Me thinks
the Hardware Store will be your new hang out ! ;o)
What fun! You did great with the camera..so nice
to hear you!
Having just done the same thing… if I see another take out box in my life… ever… it will be too soon… congrats on the move!
Erin, I give you credit as you have unpacked quite a bit (and put together the shelving!). You’re doing a terrific job. Thanks for sharing your video.
Congratulations on the move, Erin. And wow, what an incredible space. Those windows! That light! The exposed brick! And are those concrete floors? And exposed ceiling beams? You may not have posted a recipe, but you have me drooling nonetheless. Can’t wait to see it all fixed up. (So you know, I just accidentally typed “foxed up,” and then switched it to “fixed.” But I have a feeling that “foxed” works here, too.) xo.
Awesome, I loved it. Not that you are surrounded by boxes, but your humor. It’s going to be awesome. Hang in there.
Poor thing! Moving is so hard, and Dexter’s not making it any easier (but he sure is cute!)
I’m looking forward to seeing your your racks once everything is unpacked!
Seeing those baker’s racks makes it look a little like you live at my bakery right now. Although cuter. And cleaner. WAY CLEANER.
I’m actually getting prepared to move to beverly in the next ten days. It’s so blasted, buggery painful to haul all your stuff somewhere. I think I hate unpacking more than packing. So I am sending lots of empathy vibes your way.
p.s. I like that there was a completely unpacked bookshelf in the background. Shows you’ve got your priorities, girly.
I love that you spotted the neat and tidy bookcase! You better believe my books get top billing in any move 😉 Best of luck on your upcoming adventure.
You have a truly beautiful new place I can not wait to see when it is finished. I know how it is moving, I still have a few boxes and I moved over a year ago! I love the Bakers racks they look really good with that style kitchen……it is very Chic! I hope you get a lot done this weekend so you can sit down and relax and enjoy your new home.
What a pretty space – good luck unpacking and organizing!!
You’ve done a remarkable job at unpacking, creating, and organizing! It is going to be a wonderful kitchen. Can’t wait to see the outcome. And I agree with everything Jo (#1) said about liners and compartments. Life will be so much easier.
Congratulations on the move! I know how exhausting physically, mentally, and emotionally it can be!
I hope we get to see the final product 🙂
Will you post another video so we can see the finished product??
If it’s ever done I will. Right now it’s not looking good 😛
Your loft looks so pretty. Have fun putting it all together!
It was nice running into you today, Erin! Welcome to the neighborhood — your new place is gorgeous! And your kitties are so helpful, of course.
Oh my goodness. You really made me laugh when you were talking about Watson. It took me about a month to unpack in our new apartment. And we had barely anything! But that’s mainly because we were both so tired from the move, we thought we deserved to be lazy. Anyhow, good luck getting settled in, it looks BEAUTIFUL—lots of sunlight!
