Erin Cooks the Internet: March 11, 2008

Do any of you use Twitter? Because I love it and would like nothing more than to follow you. If you aren’t familiar with the Twitter phenomenon than please check out this fabulous video: Twitter in Plain English.

Engadget is reporting that HGTV and The Food Network will begin simulcasting in HD on March 31. Obviously this is great news for HD snobs like me (and probably you too). I hate that they only show reruns on the current Food Network HD Feed. Not that I don’t enjoy old Dave Lieberman episodes in high definition, but it would be nice if it mimicked the actual channel.

Kotaku has posted an early trailer for the upcoming Iron Chef America game that is being created for the Wii. Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine will be released this summer and will definitely include the voice talents of the “esteemed” chairman. Everyone keep your fingers crossed that Alton Brown will be included in some way as well.

Madeline discovered that Rachael Ray has released her own line of stocks. These cooking staples, cutely called “Stock-in-a-Box,” are available in both chicken and beef flavor.

Ned Batchelder made a rocking Doctor Who cake for his son Max’s 16th birthday. There are marshmallow Daleks and even a brownie K-9. So Ned, my birthday is in June…do I place my order with you now?

Hold the phone! Two of my favorite things, Nigella Lawson and Christmas, are being combined into one. Random House is scheduled to release “Nigella’s Christmas” in October. I think this year’s holiday party will definitely have to be an all Nigella affair.

Risa Green, author of the adorable book Notes from the Underbelly writes about a common problem that I’m sure a lot of moms have on a daily basis. How do you get your kid to eat something besides dessert? Risa apparently read some extremly helpful books and now she’s working on ways to “de-fetishize” sweets with her daughter. It sounds like she’s having good luck so far. Also, if you don’t already, than you should definitely be watching the ABC sitcom version of Notes from the Underbelly. Especially since it stars one of my favorite actresses, Jennifer Westfeldt.

Zane Lamprey: Slightly Sober

Zane Lamprey cracks me up. He’s like the frat boy big brother I always wished I’d had. Zane and I were first introduced last fall when my boyfriend and I finally purchased our first HDTV. As many of you are aware, once you have HDTV you’ll pretty much watch anything in high definition from The Secret Life of Garden Gnomes to Paint By Numbers with Bob Vila — as long as it’s in crystal clear HD you’ll tune in. MOJO is an HD only channel that our cable company offers. It airs a ton of extremely random programming including a hilarious drinking centric show called Three Sheets.

Three Sheets is essentially Zane Lamprey doing a boozed up travelogue. His job, as he likes to describe it, “Is to drink.” I love to giggle along to his shenanigans with a companionable glass of wine in hand. One of my favorite episodes aired recently and it involved a trip to Japan and the impressive consumption of what appeared to be gallons of Sake.

Not only is Zane a sure thing TiVo season pass on Mojo, but he’s also just premiered a brand new show on The Food Network called Have Fork Will Travel. The episode I caught involved Zane’s adventures in Marseilles, France. He chatted up the locals, tried some traditional bouillabaisse, ate six pounds of local cheese, and drank a lot of wine. I thoroughly enjoyed his slightly more sober commentary, even if I did miss seeing the traditional “Morning After: Zane’s Got a Hangover” scenes. I think I may have a bit of a crush on the dopey dude, but in between the debauchery and sarcasm are actual quality shows with intriguing locations and little known facts to wow your friends with.

Oh, I’ll Be Back, Ingrid

Oh, I'll Be Back, IngridIngrid Hoffman’s new Food Network show, Simply Delicioso, is presented with a saucy and fresh twist that viewers will definitely find appealing. With the lush scenery of Miami as her backdrop, Ingrid’s enthusiasm and effervescent personality allows her to connect effortlessly with the audience, drawing us in with humor and a frenetic cooking pace that just skirts the edge of Rachael Ray levels. In preparation for a sailing trip with friends, Ingrid devises a spicy one pot meal of ground turkey breast, onions, peppers, and “bells and whistles” (aka flavor or spices) topped with a cornbread crust. The preparation was, true to her word, simple and the resulting Chipolte Tamale Pie emerged from the oven looking hearty and delicious.

Jello shots otherwise referred to as “Chica Lychee shots” during the episode received an Ingrid style makeover via the mixing in of rum and lychee fruit. A brief explanation of the Lychee included a reminder that this item is available fresh for only one month of the year, but assured the audience that the canned variety are readily available in their local supermarket. In addition to the shots, which served as dessert, Ingrid also made a spicy beer Michelada which included a chili powder and salt rimmed glass, lime juice, and a few dashes of Tabasco and Worcestershire as a finish. I wonder if that combination will give you a four alarm hangover? Hmm…

Somehow Ingrid managed to cook all of these items in wedge heeled sandals and also came up with some tasteful decorative touches for the table (thankfully it wasn’t a full blown “tablescape” like you know who). Hoffman’s style of cooking appears to be a great addition to the Food Network lineup. I found her to be refreshing, bold, and just the right amount of quirky (closing her episode with, “Hasta La Vista, Baby!” made me laugh out loud). Whether or not my taste buds can handle her heat remains to be seen, but either way I look forward to trying many of her upcoming recipes in the future. Ingrid’s cookbook, Simply Delicicoso, will be released in February of 2008.

High Def Kitchens

Umm...Hello!? I have eyes.Who else is super excited about Food Network being available in HD? I’ve been waiting for this day since we bought our HDTV last summer. Comcast kept me in such suspense! And just for all of you people who reach my blog by searching for “Giada’s Breasts” I’d like to point out that yes, her lovely chest is available for viewing in all it’s glory. The only downside so far is that Sandra Lee in HD is positively frightening! OK…I totally just squealed out loud when a commercial for Nigella’s Feast came on. I love this! Hopefully Ellie Krieger will get the HD treatment soon as well.
